ARCH330 - Architectural Design Theory Fundamentals

Hi
30 December 2014, 12:44 PM
I'm about to register in 330. How is the course going? I've been in the Syllabus for 2 years, and Just finished my D3-studio, and am planning to do D4, in the Pilot project. D1,D2.... is the old terminology for the studio classes. I Don't recognize any of the people on here from the Calgary studios in the last few years, I assume most of you haven't taken one before, or are from other cities?
Any Idea how you comment on a topic, without staring a new one?

Hi Chris, ya I'm not sure either where all the other students are at, if they're just taking a single course or heading into design studios and really going for it. Hopefully the later is the case. More people in studio's makes things way better. What's this I heard you're now doing your studios online studio, is this correct? What caused you to go this way, it's not like you're living in tukyuktuk and can't access mentors. Meeting in person has to have it's advantages. Maybe you can fill me in, but also, others may learn something, by hearing your response.

Hey Kirk, the online studio is definitely a different experience so far, but different isn't necessarily disadvantageous for me to take part in. I choose to take part in the Pilot project, for a few reasons, for one I thought it would be interesting to take part in, being the first of it's kind its investigative nature has it's allure. I also saw an opportunity to become more comfortable with online presentation software such as adobe connect which we are using, I think this is knowledge which will pay off in future endeavors.
I'm also I'm wanting to press on with my studios and I'm not sure what is happening with the Calgary studio at present. I know Erin wants to step aside as the studio coordinator, as she has already put an insane amount of time and effort into the program, and us, and has other interests she rightly needs to give attention to. As far as I know, the online studios are only going to be D1-D4, so hopefully by next spring, when I plan to do D5, we will have something concrete set up in Calgary again.
One thing believe to be true about the RAIC-Syllabus in general, is it is what we the students make of it. The ball we've been given has has surely changed shape in the last few years but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be running with it. If anything we should be working extra hard to ensure a high standard and quality reputation for the RAIC-Athabasca academy. As it stands as we do.

Thanks for sharing Chris. If it's ok, I'll ask you for an update or two as you go through the course and conclude. If you feel something of note could be shared, please do so. It will be interested to see how it goes for things like Mid-terms and Final presentation, I hope there is a way we can see these. Thanks, Kirk
