Goals Journey
I am excited to complete this journey and I enjoyed learning from amazing professors and other students through forums and group projects. I experienced working with people from different cultural backgrounds and it had a huge learning point while working together towards one goal.
I began my M.Ed. program in 2019 to prepare for career advancement and also to respond to the client’s needs at the workplace demanding to offer virtual job search workshops. I enjoy teaching and creating workshops or courses for the audience.
Looking backward at my learning goals at the beginning of the e-portfolio journey I realized that I learned so many competencies that I can bring into the next chapter of my personal and career life. Now looking forward as an ePortfolio Innovative Champion in my field, and after delving into my artifacts and exploring my competencies, I want to add another capability to my list which is an important outcome of my master’s program.
First Goal
Create interactive learning courses for corporate organizations as an instructional designer
My initial goal in joining the master's program was to learn the knowledge to create interactive learning courses for corporate organizations. As a facilitator at WorkBC I used to create, update and facilitate the job search workshops. I was looking for career advancement to experience something new and rewarding like creating online courses for WorkBC or other corporations. I have two years of experience working in a corporation which involved taking various corporate pieces of training plus my background teaching experience were the reasons I wanted to make online courses for corporations.
I am completing my master's degree, and I am grateful that I learned elements of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in MDDE 604 and 610. However, at this point, I think I still need more technical knowledge to be able to work as an instructional designer in a corporation. My next step is arranging some informational interviews with industry experts to determine and prioritize the skill areas that I need to learn to be able to work as an instructional designer within corporations.

Second Goal
Understand and use new technologies for teaching and presentation purposes
As the facilitator with non-profit organizations, the managers used to ask me to market the services within the community by attending various events and presenting the services to the audience group. To promote the services, I prepared my presentations using handouts, PowerPoint, and a projector. However, something deep inside told me I need to make it more modernized and more interactive. My passion was to learn the knowledge to create animation and interactive quizzes. I learned about different technology applications in MDDE 610, and I am grateful for the extra-mile support of my professor to provide students with a wealth of knowledge. I also created an online course in Canvas which currently I am using at work, and I made some tutorial videos and podcasting. I still love to learn more about the tech aspects of the job. I know my to-do list after completing this program. I am confident I have the knowledge of universal instructional design and I can be a useful asset for any team of instructional designers.
Third Goal
Address the barriers of job seeker clients and students by offering job search workshops in the virtual environment to make it accessible for everyone
Working as a facilitator and career advisor at WorkBC since 2015, I met many clients seeking help to get a job in Vancouver. Doing so required the clients’ commitment to join the in-person job search workshops and learn the strategies. The clients came to me with different barriers to impede their attendance at workshops and they were looking for virtual workshops synchronously or asynchronously. At the time, we did not have such services and I always felt sad inside of me for not being able to help. I decided to attend the master’s degree to gain the knowledge to create asynchronous workshops so I could share the link with people and take off pressure from someone’s shoulder. Using the knowledge I gained in this program; I created the first tutorial videos in the summer of 2020 and shared the link internally with our staff and clients. The idea got attention and since 2021 WorkBC has made job search tutorial videos. Currently, we offer in-person and virtual workshops which is a blessing for our clients. Plus, offering job search workshops by WorkBC that are shared on YouTube for public use.
I also created an online course as my assignment in MDDE 604 to teach BC Employment Standards, and I still share the link with my clients to learn the rules and regulations of working in Canada and help them to have a more successful job sustainment outcome.
Fourth Goal
Select and recommend appropriate learning tools to learners
With the knowledge I gained in my master’s program, I have the knowledge to recommend the best learning management system to the organization I work for and recently I was able to convince the school I work for to have a pilot project for changing into a new LMS system.
Meanwhile, I got familiar with various technology tools and resources that I can suggest and refer the learners to those websites to upgrade their education. I created a list of those resources and I share it with my clients or students.
Bonus Goal - Fifth Goal |
Manage a training project successfully
I was fortunate to take the course MDDE 618 which provided a wealth of knowledge about project management and all the assignment were designed towards learning different phases of project management in an educational setting. I think I am ready to take my next career journey either in the instructional design field or a project manager role.
