Welcome

This portfolio represents a discussion of and reflection upon my studies in the Master of Distance Education program over two years. MDDE 602 - Research Methods in Distance Education
MDDE 603 - Foundations of Instructional Design: Systems Analysis and Learning Theory

General Acknowledgements

I would like to take the time, here in my introduction, to thank my classmates for all the lively discussions, debates and disagreements we've had throughout my studies, all of which made me reconsider my opinions and several of which changed my perspective in valuable ways.

I'd also like to say thank you to my professors, whose feedback and advice over the last two years have been invaluable tools for learning. A good guide can make any trip an adventure.

Finally, it would be arrogant to say that what I've learned in the MDE program came from within me or solely from my own interactions. I need to say thank you to everyone who has worked in education and DE for the body of knowledge they have left behind for students like myself to study. As Isaac Newton once said: "If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants."

Behind Every Great Man...

There is one person in particular who deserves special mention in this portfolio...

The reason I initially sought to earn a master's degree in education was that my wife had just completed hers, and that throughout her studies she'd engaged me in her coursework by discussing her ideas with me and asking me to critique her work. Before that, I'd never given adult education a second thought.

Later, when I applied to the MDE program, I half-jokingly wrote in my application letter that the reason I felt I could finish the program was that my wife would never let me quit after having spent so much money.

And now that I'm so near the end, I think I have to take this opportunity to acknowledge her support and motivation over the last two years. Every time I've felt that the workload was too much, or that I would never have enough time, with my other duties, to finish a project or course, she has been there to push me forward, and frequently to take over my other duties so that I'd have the time to focus on my studies.

Truly, she's the reason I'm near the end of this journey today, and I just have to say “Thank you, and I love you” to the woman who has so often helped me to reach my potential.

How I've Organized My Thoughts

My current employment doesn't specifically involve DE. Therefore the DE competencies I reflect upon throughout my VIEWS are not directly relevant to my immediate life experience. As this is the case, I've decided to seperate competency reflections and personal reflections into two.

Therefore I will begin each VIEW with a brief introduction and a reflection upon the competencies I feel that particular VIEW reflects. To make this discussion easier for readers to follow, I will first cite verbatim (from the 'MDE e-portfolio: Core Skills, Knowledge & Competencies' document) the competencies I feel are reflected, and then mention them by number in parenthesis throughout my descriptive paragraphs.

In the second section of each VIEW, I will present a personal reflection on the VIEW itself and its meaning to my current situation, wherein I'm trying to assimilate DE concepts in a non-DE environment. This discussion will be an unravelling, of sorts, of my thought process as the work was being done, and why it caught my interest.

View 3 | Theory of Practice and Curriculum Design - MDDE 603

View 4 | Designing in Action - MDDE 604

Overview

This VIEW displays my use of Moodle to create an online version of a course I have taught face-to-face for several years. This is the second VIEW I've created with the goal of demonstrating my program interest in curriculum design.

View 5 | International Issues and Business - MDDE 601/605

Overview

This fifth VIEW deals with my third area of interest, international issues. It also deals with business planning, which although not a particular interest of mine, does allow for a show of evolution of skills, through contrast with a later assignment.

View 6 | International Issues and Informal Learning - MDDE 611/614

Overview

This final VIEW, my second dealing with international issues in DE, presents a team project created by myself and Sharon Hu for MDDE 614, as well as an individual project, created for MDDE 611, focused on mainland China. Together these projects focus on international issues and informal learning.

About Me

Andre Gallant's profile picture

I was the Language Department Coordinator at MAGMA-AMGM, a non-profit settlement agency in Moncton, NB, Canada. I worked at this post for about one year, after having worked as an ESL/FSL teacher at the same organization. My work involved meeting with clients about our language services, as well as monitoring service quality and supervising the teaching staff. On the back end, I did the scheduling, kept detailed records of attendance and student performance, and worked with our ED and HR to find new staff and write grant proposals for upcoming service offerings.

Prior to MAGMA-AMGM, I was a lecturer at Huizhou University in Guangdong, China. I held this post for eight years, and also worked in the foreign affairs office helping manage the foreign staff and foster international relations. In my off hours, I designed and taught English training courses for numerous international corporations. Before working at Huizhou university, I taught high school English at Huidong Senior Middle School and worked as vice-principle for Hoperising Education's Huizhou office. I also did numerous other part-time teaching jobs at various levels.

When I'm not teaching, my hobbies include open-source software and computers in general, music, and travel. I contribute, in a limited capacity, to the Ubuntu project; I play piano, guitar, bass, and drums; and I have traveled or lived in 20 countries and counting. I am also fluently bilingual (English and French), and speak some Mandarin Chinese.

What It All Means

If, for some reason, you'd rather just skip to the end of my portfolio and read my conclusion, then feel free to do so. I do, however, think that the journey is as interesting as the destination, and encourage you to take the scenic route through my VIEWs before getting to my conclusion.
