Artifact #2: MDDE 602 Research Design Evaluation and Critique

Introduction

If I am to be very honest, both this course and artifact created a great deal of anxiety for me. For you see, this artifact was Assignment #1 in a course that mainly focused on research design and evaluation, which for me meant that I would be subjected to a world of mathematical equations and number crunching. However what I was soon to learn is that research is a very multifaceted discipline, that includes many approaches. As luck would have it, qualitative research was actually both appealing and interesting to me.

Artifact # 1 had provided me with the opportunity to author an essay about why qualitative research is the best option for distance education? This paper presented a wonderful opportunity for me to gain confidence in my abilities, by articulating a logical argument about a topic that I found to be greatly intimidating. As an added bonus, when I started to further understand some key concepts, I actually discovered that quantitative research is very interesting and not as intimidating as I originally believed it to be.

Reflection

I knew that it was time to try and overcome my fear of numbers; however I was pleasantly optimistic, when introduced to qualitative research. It was during my participation in this course that I discovered the benefits of qualitative research. For me this was a match made in heaven, as I am a person who prefers a more hands-on and interactive approach to research (5.2).

As I progressed through the course, I realized that my confidence was also improving, once I started to understand and manage the course workload (6.5). This new found enthusiasm was very much evident in assignment #1, in which I was required to support and articulate why I believe that qualitative research is the best option for distance education. From my perspective qualitative research provides the opportunity for analysis of real life interactions, capturing meaningful interactions and concepts (5.7). Through observation and interactions with learners, qualitative research provides more flexibility for real life observations, as opposed to a more linear and theoretical approach of quantitative research (2.1).

Another great benefit for me was that this course provided me with additional knowledge that I could practically apply to my day-to-day job responsibilities. While working as a business analyst (BA), a great deal of time is spent observing and documenting business processes and interactions. Such observational techniques are very much consistent with the qualitative research approach. Additionally, as in the business world, distance learners may also be evaluated in practical real life situations. For example, some distance learners may interact with a variety of learning tools and technologies; this may include Learning Management System (LMS), rich learning content (video, audio files) and other innovative options (2.4).

It is important to note that although it is not my preference, I also realized that quantitative research plays an important role in research. It is quantitative research that provides statistical validation, which is very important in all research endeavors (5.10). With this in mind, I also learned that quantitative research also plays a role in some of my employment responsibilities, including raw data collections and interpretations (3.2). Having an understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methods has provided me with sound research knowledge; knowledge that can be practically applied in my professional life (5.2). This discovery was significant, as it this was another step closer to combating what I considered to be a fear of numbers.

I have always preferred more of a hands on approach to research. I have often used observation, as a means of collecting valuable information, while working as a business analyst (5.8). What I have learned is that such observations are consistent with the Interpretive Social Science, with an emphasis on constructing meaning through participation and interaction. (Neuman, 2011, p.101)

As an observer of events, I am always cognizant of the need to maintain objectivity, trying to avoid biases that I may have. It is always best to observer events and record in a systematic manner (5.11). This is a process that I continue to utilize today, and the importance of unobtrusive  research practice was another important knowledge piece, acquired from the experience of this assignment (4.7).

In Summary

Interestingly what started as a somewhat dreaded research course, turned into a great learning opportunity and moment to overcome both my fear and intimidation of research. The added bonus is that I have also acquired additional knowledge that can be practically applied to my professional life. It is Distance education, and great instructor/student interaction that assisted me in overcoming my learning barriers.

Learning is about empowerment and self - awareness and this was most certainly the case for me. It is very important that distance education students do not feel isolated or disconnected from the learning process. Ongoing communication and collaboration with course facilitators and peers provided encouragement and a much needed support system. What I perceived to be an insurmountable challenge, proved to be both rewarding and confidence building.

Once I was near completion of the assignment, my sense of relief transformed to that of pride and accomplishment; I really felt great! With each passing week I started to become excited and eager, in my pursuit of knowledge. This new found enthusiasm exemplified the notion that distance education can really be an empowering experience.

Dillon,

Proofread carefully. I noted quite a few places where you used a word you hadn't intended, as as a result, the sentence didn't make sense. In one place there was a stray "o" mid sentence.  Also, consistently use the past tense, as you are looking back at an experience that happened in the past.  You need to be consistent about which artefact you selected -- in one place you refer to assignment 1, in another to assignment 2.  Spell out BA, as acronyms make your message more difficult to understand. The acronym goes in parentheses, not the spelled out phrase -- for example Learning Management Systems (LMSs).

Using both modes together is not triangulation, it is mixed mode research. triangulation refers to the collection of data from a variety of sources in order to provide a more valid set of indicators of something.

Clearly, with some polishing, your Reflection will be more better.

Hi Dillon, Please respond to Susan's feedback and really carefully proof-read (again!) as there are still numerous typos, missing and misused words and punctuation (etc.) on this page. For example, right in your very first paragraph: "in a course that that mainly focussed and research design" & "new-found" & "although It is not my preference," - among many others. Also as Susan notes, you seem to be confusing two different assignments here: 1 and 2.

Please clarify which you are talking about and reflecting on.

Send me a message in the Moodle course and respond here when you have made the changes Susan and I have recommended.

Hi Debra,

I read over all of the  comments...I think you will find this to much better-:)

Thanks

Dillon,

I had a difficult time trying to figure out what particular artefact you had chose for your reflection (same for Artefact 3). It would be great if you would start by providing this information explicitly.  Also, stating why you had chosen to include the particular artefact in your e-portfolio would be helpful.

Dillon,

Try to integrate your images into your page format, and ensure that each has an appropriate title (Mahara automatically puts in the title Image).

Hello Dillon,

It is obvious that you have made great effort to build your reflection. However, I think that there some typos on this page such as "that that". Moreover, you should put a more appropriate title above each image you incorporated. In addition, I think that there are more competencies than just these you mentioned. For example, in my opinion, 5.4 competency (Critically review literature both broadly and in-depth) is demonstrated in the last sentence of the last paragraph of your reflection.

Thank you,

Dimitrios Georgopoulos

Hi Dillon,

This is much improved from when I first saw it, but still some revisions to make.

I see you haven't yet responded to Susan's recommendation from June 5 about integrating your images - or to my comment about adding hyphens (e.g. "This new found enthusiasm"). There is also still a typo in the last line of your Summary ("other academic opportunists in the future." Dimitrios makes some good points in his feedback above too - that you should respond to.

Also your last para of your Reflection section seems to be very repetitive of text you have earlier in your reflection piece, so try to revise this to better focus on your learning from just Assignment 1.

Let me know when you have made the revisions to all your pages and I'll review again.

Much improved, thanks Dillon.

I look forward to a discussion of the relative merits of quantitative and qualitative research in your work.
