Welcome!

This e-portfolio is a reflection of my learning progress, research and discussions in my MDDE 610 course, thus showcasing some of my work as I complete the course. It will capture notes, images, screenshots or other artefacts that I consider important during my learning process in the course. MDDE 610 is a course that covers some of the most important communication technologies, and the portfolio will cover my impressions and thoughts about the technologies and how they can help enhance student learning in distance education courses.

One of my main projects I am looking at in the long term is to convert an existing vocational English course at a Korean university into DE format. The Korean university in question is the Seoul National University of Science and Technology, commonly known as SeoulTech, and the course focuses on topics specializing in business and IT. From now on, when I talk about this course in this portfolio, I will refer to it as the SeoulTech English course or SeoulTech course. My goal is to analyze and identify the technologies that will help achieve the conversion to DE format. As such, my discussions on each of the technologies will be divided into two parts:

  1. A generic discussion of my general thoughts and impressions of the technology itself.
  2. A more detailed discussion on how the technologies can be applied in developing a DE stream of this English course.

The technologies that the course discusses include:

  1. Learning Management Systems (LMS) / Course Management Systems (CMS)
  2. E-mail
  3. List Servers & Email lists
  4. Mobile Learning
  5. Electronic portfolios
  6. Web 2.0 applications, such as YouTube or Wiki's
  7. Social Networking tools and blogs
  8. Photograph Sharing tools
  9. Text chatting
  10. Web conferencing
  11. Internet telephony
  12. Videoconferencing

I hope you enjoy reading this portfolio as much as I have enjoyed developing it.

About Me

Although I am currently in the high tech industry working in Vancouver and have worked as a database analyst, administrator and tester, I would like to move my career towards the field of education. I have taught high-tech courses in a local college for three years, and taught English in Asia. I have also lived in Europe for many years, and speak several languages, including English, French, Spanish, with working knowledge of German, Italian and Portuguese and a basic knowledge of Korean.

In keeping with my IT roots and experience, especially in communications technology, I am very much interested in exploring different communications technologies that can be used in distance education. In particular, I would like to explore these technologies when developing curriculum for vocational DE English courses which specialize in teaching English to Korean students, but with a focus on business or IT topics. In this way, students not only learn English, but can apply the language skills to their field of interest.

As I progress through the course, I will be posting my findings, learning progress, work produced and other artifacts to display my progress in the course and, hopefully, share something useful with others.

Enjoy!
