E-portfolio Reflection
While creating this reflective learning journey presentation I quickly became aware of its benefits. Reflecting on my learning path has enabled me to identify new awareness, areas of improvements, and foster critical thinking regarding my work throughout the program. The addition of e-portfolio to the MDDE program demonstrates Athabasca University's commitment to ensuring a quality learning experience.
Once I understood the expectations of the e-portfolio, I began my own orientation to Mahara. I have experience with a variety of web-based design software; therefore, I welcomed the opportunity to become acquainted to Mahara.
As a method of choosing appropriate artefacts, I created a table outlining each assignment, discussions, and other related work (mainly from the core courses) then I listed the competencies each covered. Choosing artefacts that demonstrated a variety of competencies was difficult. There were much more than five items that I wanted to share in this e-portfolio. While reviewing my work I felt empowered and a great sense of pride. I often thought "wow, I wrote this paper?" I spent much time re-reading artefacts and analyzing each competency to best reflect my learning journey.
A few significant "aha" moments that I encountered after completing this e-portfolio are:
1) As I reviewed chosen artefacts, I was pleased to see that many competencies duplicated themselves. This signifies that not only are competencies acquired but they are also integrated throughout the program as a way to foster and establish a solid foundation for the learners.
2) Until the creation of this portfolio, I did not recognize how fortunate I have been in applying my new knowledge to my work environment. Many of the artefacts included in the e-portfolio have been either incorporated or considered in real life circumstances. I now realize how this entire program and its relevancy in connection to my career have enriched my learning and knowledge.
3) The process of integrating the competencies into each page was profound. As I integrated competencies, I found my thinking shifting and I began internalizing and recognizing relevant competencies that I overlooked while choosing the artefacts.
From these experiences, I recognize the importance of extending and developing thinking skills; therefore, I plan to encourage students to create a e-portfolio that not only captures their work and achievements as well as fosters empowerment, growth, and reflection as it has done for me.
I would like to mention that I waited until the very end of the program to assemble this e-portfolio. I recognize the benefits of working on this journey throughout the program as suggested. However, I am pleased to report that I encountered a great sense of accomplishment and closure as I reflected on my entire learning journey by completing this e-portfolio at the end of the program.
Now What?
My first plan is to take some time off and spend it with my understanding neglected family. In September, as a continuation of my lifelong learning journey, I will begin taking a statistics course to help with my researching skills. I found that I was very weak in this area and feel the need to better educate myself with research tools.
Also, I plan to work on gaining more awareness in terms of student barriers. I found that MDDE course concepts activities that surrounded student demographics, accessibility and other common barriers in DE is an area that I would like to explore further. Whether it is within my community or on a larger scale I recognize the need for a clearer understanding in this area by society as a whole.
In addition, I plan to review existing online classes with my new found knowledge regarding course design and learning theories.
Acknowledgements
I would like to extend my thanks to the individuals who contributed to my success in the MDDE program. Those include the most important people in my life, my family. Their understanding and support enabled me to stay focused throughout this journey. I would also like to thank my co-workers, specifically the Deans, who without their guidance and advice I would not have undertaken the Master's program. Lastly, I would like to thank my professors and classmates who were amazing. All those involved at AU provided a positive, engaging learning environment which significantly enhanced my learning and experiences.
