What is Social Software?
Social software is an application designed to communicate and interact with others via a multitude of tools. Social software serves as an application that creates and sustains a connection amoung its users by supporting community building, mentoring, and personal learning.
Initial Thoughts
As I read through the materal and checked out the social software available in this course "The Landing" I was curious to know if this type of technology is available for BC Campus students that are enrolled in Office Administration couses.
Learned Concepts
- Set up and exlore features of an Athabasca Landing.
- Future uses of social software.
- Exposure to the privacy issues related to social networking sites.
Concluding Thoughts
Much like many of my classmates I am not much of a e-socializer.
I found Athabasca Landing to be quite cumbersome and just another place to post/respond/comment. Although I understand its purpose and support the idea of building a community, I am partial to Mahara, it seems to have the features that I am personally interested in.
As for applying this to online courses, I did some research and found that BC Campus, for our particular program, does not offer any type of social software for students. Interestingly there is a social space for instructors. Since many of the online Office Administration courses lack cooperative and collaborative learning activities, I foresee that social software would be a welcoming addition to the online program.
